WEEK 6 Three Portraits
WK6 Mona Lisa
1) What I see in this painting of The Mona Lisa, I see framing, technique, lighting and contouring. All these things could teach us about photography because we have to use all of these elements to come up with something of the whole.
2) If I were asked to set up a portrait, and it were my choice of place and setting where the photos were being shot, I would take them to maybe a forested area or river around sunset, and have them face the sun facing me, turned halfway towards me, looking back at me, or looking up at me, and then down at me. I would want all the angles I could get while using natural lighting so that the pictures would look more natural and healthy.
3)Pyramidal Composition is where there is a larger base at the bottom of the subject, and then the subject gradually gets slimmer towards the top. (ex: arms to head) You want to put the subjects arms and hands to rest on something that way they do not look awkward, and they are more relaxed. Different ways to use a background would be to have it fade out the further away it gets from the subject, and or changing scenery. Maybe use a river instead of the ocean, mountains instead of trees, and even other people to make it more chaotic if you’re going for that look.
4) Shadows help out in many different ways. It can help out with figuring out a face, neck line, jaw line, or even a background. They help the viewer’s eyes to figure out whats what in the photo, or painting.
5) The take home message on clothing is to use clothing as a helping factor to your subjects face and maybe your use of highlighting. You do not want clothing to be a distracting factor.
6) What is thought to be missing from The Mona Lisa is the two (possible) columns around her. In the first picture that is shown to us, there are two half circles and it has left artists wondering what is supposed to be there. They have decided that the circles are columns that have been cut out of the picture so that the photo itself could be framed.
7) This method of framing affects framing because you cannot see the whole intended painting, and that takes away some of the depth as to of what you are looking and admiring.
WK5 Photo Critique
Picture 1:
1) The center of interest in this picture I took is between the goal net itself or the goal post that has leading lines. I placed it in the frame so that you could see the leading lines, and just all the lines in general. I got close enough to the lines and net so that the message of the picture would be the all the lines and the goal net. I did not leave anything out, I got the picture I wanted. It is somewhat zoomed in on the net but you can still see what is behind it and that was what I was trying to do. The background of this picture does not distract from what I was trying to shoot for. I was shooting for all of the lines in this particular spot of the goal because of the goal post, leading post, and shadows that it leaves behind, so everything fits in with the picture and nothing takes away from that. The objects are all in focus, though it looks like the goal net is the center of all focus, it is not. The exposure of this picture is mediocre. It is light, but I just started photography so I am new to that, but it should get better as I learn more about shooting pictures. What I like about the selected subject is the whole aspect of the picture. I love that is something about Soccer and that it shows a really angle of the goal, plus with the colors of the field it enhances the picture tone. To me, this picture is an emotional shot just because of my love for the game. If I could take the same photograph I would try to get the whole goal or something around it more, all though I like the picture I took I wish I could have gotten more of the goal.
Picture 2:
1) The center of interest of this picture I took is the three windows because they are the reason I took the photo. I placed this in the middle of the frame that way I could get all of them in the picture. I do not think there are any wasted material in the picture because I got the framing around the objects I wanted to get in the picture. I think that the picture really gets everything I was trying to capture, which was the three windows and how they balance. The background distracts to the picture because you can see a little bit of the sky and that throws off the whole horizon line thing I was going for. The objects are clearly in focus, there is so zooming in so close that it is blurry or uneven. The photo is exposed properly, it is light but not overwhelming light. What I like about my photograph is that it has balance and lines. This photograph is a statement shot for me because I got two elements in one picture. If I could take this picture again, I would try to get the sky in the picture so that way I could have the horizon line on the top, along with the balance and lines.

WK4 Boat Composition
Photo 1:
This photograph has Grouping because the raindrops all fall together around one another unintentionally, but they all fall together. This photo also has Texture because the viewer can see that the raindrops are wet, and that adds a sort of texture to the photo. Some raindrops are dragging down the window and makes the drop longer.
Photo 2:
This photograph has Grouping, just like the first picture because all the boats are docked next together. This photo also has Lines because of the dock posts that are located at the front of the boats. They are aligned with one another in a parallel way so it makes symmetry along with lines. This photo has texture because of the clouds, the water ripples, and the sky. They all add a sense of touch to the photo to the viewer.
Photo 3:
This photograph has lines because of the boats front angle has horizontal lines. The windows on the boat give it Symmetry, it also has textures because of the water ripples around the boat itself, and also the way the light hits the boat and water gives it texture.
Photo 4:
This photograph has texture because of the water ripples, and then the sun hits the water and the way it comes out of the clouds gives it texture, also. This photo has Depth of Field also, because the way the sun hits the water kind of makes it the center of attention. You can see the surrounding objects around the sun ray but the eye goes directly to that first. It also has lines, because the water ripples match up and go horizontally from one another giving it a line affect.
WK4 Photoshop Practice
WK 4 Composition

This photo covers the Rule of Thirds because if you split it into thirds, (nine squares) you can still see the balanced and the viewer can interact with the photo more naturally. The viewer should notice the informal balance because of the tower monument in the back, and also the two trees that are aligned parallel to each other. There are horizontal lines in the picture, the lawn, the shadows the trees cause, and the bushes in the back all cause lines. In the photograph there is framing because of the two trees on the outside edges kind of set up a frame like situation. There is also grouping because this whole picture fits two trees, one monument, and a bench and a lantern.
